VV Winery 7: Aveleda

Now this is a name I think most people will recognize. It’s the number 1 selling Vinho Verde producer in the world, exporting to over 80 countries!

It’s still family owned, actually in its 5th generation! The beautiful, sprawling estate itself goes back to 1670, but wine production didn’t start until 1870. It was French winemaker Eugene Hellisse that was intrigued by the property while noticing it on a train ride back from Douro. He got off the train, approached the property and was thereafter hired to be a consultant for the wine. Because of his French influence, the first wines produced were in a French style, not on trellises like most Vinho Verde.

When you arrive at Aveleda, you feel like you’re stepping back in time. Cobble stones, greenery, horse and buggies, peacocks roaming the ground, I could go on and on, but instead I’ll share some of the stunning photos.

They produce 2 labels at this property - Aveleda and Casal Garcia. 5 years ago, these grounds were only 150 hectares and now, they’re over 600 hectares with a stunning garden on the property (I honestly could’ve spent days in this garden).

This producer also has properties in almost every single region in Portugal - so their presence is huge in the country.

This is a can’t-miss stop if you’re ever in Vinho Verde. And make sure you allot a lot of time to spend here because once you arrive, you’re not going to want to leave.
