Wines I Bought This Week (02/14/21)
This week I picked up an interesting assortment of wines. It was definitely a selection outside of my usual, but I was feeling a bit adventurous. So after perusing the Paris Paris wine shop (their selection really is top notch), I narrowed it down to 3 (so difficult!) and here’s what I ended up with.
From Burgundy, I got a Pinot Noir/Gamay blend - Sextant from young winemaker, Julien Altaber. It blows my mind that I haven’t had this before considering the amount of just gamay and just pinot noir from Burgundy that I’ve had. This wine comes from the village of St. Aubin and it’s a natural wine (rare in Burgundy). I’m definitely very excited to drink what’s described as “chuggable adult grape juice”.
Next up, I got a red wine from Burgenland, Austria - Koppitsch 'Perspektive' Rot 2017. This wine is a blend using Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent grapes, And St. Laurent is actually from the same family of grapes as Pinot Noir - so given the typical climate in Austria, it’s really no surprise that it can grow with success there. This wine is said to be a serious red, so I’ll have to ensure I’m reading or watching something serious when I enjoy it!
Lastly, I got a white wine - Weinbach Sylvaner 2017. This wine is from the Alsace region in eastern France. I haven’t had many Sylvaner’s so I’m looking forward to seeing the uniqueness in this one. It should be fairly full bodied, with notes of grassiness and wet stones. I’ve heard that this one pairs really well with vegetables, which is perfect since that’s all I ever eat!
